Joyce’s Story (in her own words…)
I grew up in a family that ate the typical American diet and spent way too much time in front of the television. However, I have always been drawn to fresh, homegrown foods and good physical works.
I will never forget as a kid being given canned beets and never liking them. One day my mom came home with beets that my great grandfather had grown. She steamed them and served them with butter and I fell in love!
I realized two things: I loved and needed fresh food, and I wanted to be a gardener.
Now, I have owned and lived on an organic farm for five years. In that time period, I had an eye exam that showed that my nearsightedness has improved (even after having had two children). I attribute that to the clean water, good food and hard work of farm life.
I recently have moved to Tallahassee and I continue to grow most of my own food, work on a farm with my partner, and I have several jobs that keep me fit and involved in my community. I teach yoga, paint houses, landscape, teach people how to grow their own food, and how to harvest and preserve their harvest. I am also a pastry chef, and I enjoy making delicious goodies that not only please the palate but treat the body as well.
