In the April Flyer, we asked readers to “Tell us the best April’s Fools prank you’ve ever played!” The winning entry came from Liz in Columbus, Ohio. Here is Liz’s story, in her own words…
Hi there! I wanted to share a prank I pull on a prior boss of mine (only prior because he retired – and I had nothing to do with that!) He was an elementary school principal in Grove City, Ohio and I was his secretary. He happened to live in my neighborhood. We were on Spring Break from school and it was April 1 and close to Easter that year. It was (and still is) my birthday.
I made this beautiful springtime cake with white icing, coconut flakes and jelly beans – it was
B E A U T I F U L. The only glitch was that the inside was a real sponge shaped into a rectangular cake.
When I dropped it off I said I was in a hurry. He was too as he was just getting ready to go pick-up a pizza. I did say something like “I hope you like angel food – you know, sponge cake because that’s what the cake is.” He said it was one of his favorites and they were waiting on company so he would share with them!
I left and in about 10 minutes he calls me laughing hysterically. He said he decided to sneak a little bite before he went to get the pizza and couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t get the knife through the cake. It’s been many years since we’ve spoken but I’m sure my name and sponge cake still go hand and hand in his world!
